Studio D'Artisan X's-32 Christmas Model

As we mentioned before, earlier this year marked our 5th Anniversary and now we're finally ready to commemorate the occasion and inviting our friends and customers to help us celebrate with a free party and charity event on December 9th from 8pm-12am presented at the new WIP Gallery, located at 34 Vandam Street in lower Manhattan. The evening will begin with music from some guest DJ’s followed by a live performance from Roy Ayers with Japanese imported Sake, Asahi beer, and hors d’oeuvres prepared by an onsite Sushi Chef being served during the early part of the evening. The music will continue throughout the night with DJ performances from Q-Tip and Lord Finesse and a special guest appearance from Black Thought of The Roots, along with other guest DJ’s.

Blue in Green’s 5th Anniversary Party is a joint Charity Event for kizunaworld.org organized by Ryuichi Sakamoto - fund raising project for Japan, and made possible with help from our sponsors: Samurai Jeans, Momotaro Jeans, The Real McCoy's, Studio D'Artisan, Niigata Sake Selections, Backlash by Isamu Katayama, Eternal Jeans, Pure Blue Japan, and Asahi Beer.

New - Samurai S710BK Black Shadow Ltd Ed.

The S710BK Black Shadow is the second model of our Limited Edition Blue in Green and Samurai collaboration "Shadow" series, a two part production using Samurai's S710 Mid rise Tapered leg silhouette and cut for the first time in their 17oz selvage "Zero" denims in Indigo and Black. The Black Shadow model features the Black Zero denim with Black topstitch detailing, Black leather patch embossed with Silver ink, Black rivets, the Samurai Jin model iron plated buttons, and Jin model Ecru color front pocket bags with an original Jacquard woven pattern.

As with our S710BKII-BIG model that also uses this 17oz Black "Zero" denim, the warp threads of the fabric are dyed Black prior to weaving and the weft yarns are White as is common with indigo-dyed jeans. In addition, as the Black warp yarns are rope dyed, and the cores of the yarns are left undyed, the denim will crock and fade similar to Indigo dyed denim jeans. New Shipment of Momotaro & Blue in Green - 0705BIG Collaboration Jeans

We've just received a new shipment of our Momotaro 0705BIG collaboration jeans. A few years ago before we starting carrying the Momotaro brand we were asked for input on designing a new slim fitting silhouette for their "Going to Battle" Label which they later debuted in Japan as the style 0705SP. Momotaro's heavyweight 6x6 sanforized selvage denim was used on the 0705SP, and is only sold as a one wash jean, laundered with a special process using sea water from the coast of Okayama city. The 0705SP also feature Momotaro's "Battle Stripes" painted on the right rear pocket and Pink color inseam stitching to symbolize the peach from which the young Momotaro sprang in the famous story of their brand's namesake.

When deciding on an idea for a collaboration model with Momotaro we thought it was only fitting that we use this slim 0705 silhouette along with some minor detail changes. So for those who prefer the subtle detailing of Momotaro's Copper Label offerings as seen with the 0701 and 0201 styles but the slimmer fit of the 0705SP we present the 0705BIG

For custom details, the first thing we did was offer them Raw (the 0705SP only come one washed), and changed the fly front tack buttons from the silver finish type of the 0705SP to the Copper ones used for their Gold Label styles, then opted for plain rear pockets (the placement of the painted "battle stripes" of the 0705SP were moved from the right rear pocket to the newly designed custom patch). The center back seam and back yoke top stitching was changed to a smaller #3 thread replacing the heavier #0 thread used on the 0705SP, and the side seam and inseam top stitching color was revised from Pink to Burnt Red which fades over time to closer resemble the Peach color intended.

New - Samurai S710BKII-BIG Limited Edition

The S710BK was a limited edition model produced back in 2008 using Samurai's heavyweight 19oz Black selvage denim. This year we decided to produce more of these but this time using their 17oz Model "Zero" Black selvage denim, a first for this combination together with the S710 silhouette. As with the 19oz Black denim, the warp threads of this fabric are dyed Black prior to weaving and the weft yarns are White as is common with indigo-dyed jeans. In addition, as the Black warp yarns are rope dyed, and the cores of the yarns are left undyed, the denim will crock and fade similar to Indigo dyed denim jeans. Our new S710BKII-BIG matches the details of the original such as Orange and Lemon Yellow color thread topstitch sewing, Copper rivets, Samurai's Iron-made Sunrise buttons, their original "Shogyo Mujo" Jacquard pattern Pocket bags, Tan Leather patch with Black ink printing, and Red & Silver Lamé selvage line.

New - Studio D'Artisan D1554 - Limited Edition Rope Dyed Natural Indigo Jeans

The Studio D'Artisan D1554 is made from a new 14oz Japanese selvage denim developed by SDA made of 100% Zimbabwe Cotton and Rope Dyed with Natural Indigo to bring out a deep dark color seldom seem from natural indigo and are designed to fade like a regular indigo denim. Most natural indigo dyed denims are woven with yarns that have been dyed by hand which causes the indigo to penetrate the cores of the cotton yarns creating a denim that holds it's color longer and therefore will not show color fading similar to regular indigo rope dyed denims. Rope dying allows for regulating how deep the indigo will penetrate so the cores can be left undyed giving way to color fading of the outermost layers of indigo.

Rope dying requires large amounts of indigo spread out across several vats for mechanized repeated dying and is rarely done with natural indigo due to high cost factors. SDA however, have chosen this method to use for the D1554 and this combination of rope dying and natural indigo results in a jean that will fade and distress as a regular indigo rope dyed denim would but with the added feature of being dyed with natural indigo.

Other features includes front pocket bags made with fabric that has been Hand Dyed with Natural Indigo and also used for the half lined rear pockets, a Deer skin leather patch, and Triple-needle chain stitch seam construction at center back and yoke seams. We've received a new shipment of the Left Field loop terry cross grain Sweatshirts in crew neck and hooded styles. Both made of 16 oz., 100% Ringspun Cotton loop terry, and fashioned after Champion sweatshirts from the 1950s, with the grain of the fleece running horizontally instead of vertically ("crossgrain") so as to prevent the sweatshirt from shrinking / losing its shape with wear. The crew necks have side-panel ribbed construction and V-stitch at neck front with ribbed insert. Blue in Green - 5th Anniversary Model N-02

Earlier this year we celebrated our 5th Anniversary, officially in April when we opened the store back in 2006 and unofficially on January 1st when we established the store. At that time there were no other stores in North America or Europe with a lineup of imported Japanese selvage denim brands and we took on the challenge of being the first to do so. We started with just a very small inventory from a handful of brands, a street address, and a telephone - no advertising, no website, no online store - and within these 5 1/2 years we've grown to become known worldwide as a premier resource for Japanese selvage denim jeans with a customer base spanning the globe, and for this we give thanks. To everyone who's supported us throughout the years, we'd like to further extend our thanks and gratitude, and hope that we can continue to provide our services and resources for your continued support in the years to come.

For the occasion, we've produced a 5th Anniversary Limited Edition jean using our store original N-01 slim fit silhouette and a newly developed denim from one of our earliest denim suppliers, and offering them at a very special price. This new denim was 10 years in the making and combines everything learned in his 40+ years in the denim industry in Japan and abroad, and one that he's most proud of.

It's a 15oz Right Hand Twill unsanforized selvage denim that weighs in at 16oz after washing. The cotton used is a blend of extra long fiber Zimbabwe cotton and extra short fiber USA cotton giving the texture a look of nep fabric with loads of White cotton and Indigo tufts poking through the face and backside of the denim (for those familiar with the earliest Samurai Texas Cotton denim or the Left Field Tweed denim, it has a similar look to those).

Typically the warp and weft yarns are spun in the right hand direction prior to weaving but for this denim the warp and weft yarns were spun in reverse creating a tighter weave and giving the denim a stiff and crunchy texture. This also results in the warp yarns being more pronounced, similar to how a Left Hand Twill denim looks but done in a Right Hand Twill weave, and also intensifies the vertical color fading results.

In addition, the warp yarns are deep Indigo dyed with a Green Sulphur topping and interwoven with Beige dyed weft yarns for an overall muted and subtle green cast. The backside of the denim has a plush and soft hand due in large part to the extra long fiber Zimbabwe cotton and will continue to soften and smooth over time, eventually creating a smooth and refined texture on the face as well. Oni Denim Awa Shoai - 19oz Natural Indigo

New Oni Denim Awa Shoai, 19oz original Japanese selvage denim Hand dyed with natural indigo harvested from the Tokushima prefecture in Japan by one of only a handful of indigo craftsmen capable of this dyeing technique certified by the Japanese government to be a national living treasure. This denim is woven with the same low tension and irregular manner as Oni's regular medium weight denim but done so with heavier and more uneven threads giving it an extra slubby texture. The silhouette is the same as the Oni Blue fit and the denim features dual Solid and Tri-color selvage lines, one edge is plain White with the other edge being White, Purple, & Yellow (traditional colors of the Edo Period in Japan). A small excerpt from the "Journal of The Society of International Natural Dyeing". We acquired this from a close friend many years back and had it posted on our website but was misplaced until recently rediscovering it. This six page discussion focuses on natural indigo dyeing in Tokushima Japan and the historical background of natural indigo (known in Tokushima as "sukumo"), how sukumo is used and made, and how the dyebath is made. The process of creating natural indigo in Japan differs from that in other parts of the world in that the leaves are fermented to extract the indigo compound, a process that can take upwards of one year for a single batch of sukumo.

This highly prized and coveted sukumo can be found in a select few jeans sold in our store that are dyed with natural indigo harvested from Tokushima prefecture, helping to keep this centuries old tradition alive. Warehouse have collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Featherbed Co to produce this Goose Down Vest with Wild Horse Leather Yokes and Sheepskin Fur lined collar. The body is made from from a Japan made high grade nylon taffeta. The average fabric weight commonly found in outerwear using nylon taffeta is around a 10D-30D grade. However the body for this vest is made of higher-density 70D Nylon Taffeta fabric and in a matte finish to replicate a vintage type finish as opposed to the shiny finish that taffeta is known for.

Warehouse have provided the leather for the front and back yokes which are specifically made of leather from horses found only in the wild, so noticeable scaring and staining will be visible. This leather is only available on the Warehouse versions of outerwear for Rocky Mountain Featherbed Co.

We've just received a new shipment of the Samurai S5000VX21oz. These were first introduced back in 2009 and have not seen another release since then, until now. The S5000VX21oz are made from Samurai's original 21oz denim they call the "Cloth of Super Excellence".

What separates Samurai's heavy denim from the others is that they use uneven threads and yarns that are tightly spun from rugged cotton fibers then woven on vintage looms in the same manner as traditional lighter weight denims, which is a far greater challenge than just using soft and heavy filler yarns that glide through smoothly when weaving on the old wooden shuttle looms. Samurai's heavy ounce denims instead create a great amount of stress on these old machines and were it not for the highly skilled weaving craftsmen who are able to keep the machines under control, these denims would not be possible. The same goes for the sewing craftspeople who are able to construct these heavy ounce jeans with beautiful precision and finesse and do it using 100% cotton threads which is an unprecedented feat and a great achievement all its own. Samurai pushes the limits at all stages of the production process, and after rigorous tests throughout the years, are able to produce heavy ounce denims that not only look and feel superb but that could also achieve ultimate color fading.

However, Samurai are not only concerned with just being heavy, their aim is to create the highest quality garments in the spirit of old style manufacturing using traditional methods and techniques, just Amplified.

Studio D'Artisan - D1513 Natural Indigo Jean

Studio D'Artisan are known for their beefy and heavy weight denims and have produced several using natural indigo dye but the D1513 offers something new in the way of a light weight 100% cotton 12.5oz Japanese selvage denim, dyed with natural indigo from the Tokushima prefecture in Japan using the Kasé Zomé technique. This dyeing process is done in very small batches using a special machine that operates similar to hand dyeing in that the undyed yarns are dipped into indigo vats, exposed to air for oxidation, twisted to squeeze out the excess dye, and then repeated depending on the preferred shade of blue. Details include Dual color 100% cotton thread top stitch sewing throughout, alternating the colors on the top and bottom; where there is Yellow outer layer stitching there will be Orange stitching beneath and vice versa, Triple-needle dual color chain stitching at yoke and center seams, Lining reinforced back yoke, Half-lined Rear pockets, and Leather patch with Gold leaf embossing. Fullcount & Co., long known for their extra long-staple 100% Zimbabwe cotton Japanese selvage denims, continue their Legacy of producing elegant long-staple selvage jeans with the release of the 1108SH. With this new model, Fullcount set a challenge to create a premium selvage jean of "absolute quality at an even more challenging price". They chose to take this challenge to China, seeking out the finest artisan craftspeople available and using the finest extra long-staple Chinese cotton available, hand picked and harvested for centuries in the city of Turfan.

Turfan (吐鲁番), or Turpan as it's also known, is an ancient city located in the northern Xinjiang Uyghur region of China and was once an important strategic point along the Silk Road trade route. Xinjiang was one of the first regions in China to cultivate cotton which they began harvesting and weaving just under 2,000 years ago.

Together with Hubei and Jiangsu provinces, Xinjiang produces the highest quality cotton in China, with Xinjiang as the sole producer of long-staple cotton in China. Turfan's extra long-staple cotton is used around the world in the manufacture of top-grade textiles.

The 1108SH, which shares the same fit, detailing, and trimmings of the Japan made Fullcount 1108, is a fully in-country produced garment beginning with the cotton which was harvested, spun, dyed, and shuttle woven in China; then cut, sewn, and manufactured with the highest standards of quality and detail by the finest artisan craftsmen that China has to offer. Please note that Fullcount will continue to produce all of their regular mainline products in Japan as they always have, it is only those items for this special project using Turfan cotton that they will produce in China.

Samurai S5000BK Re-stocked in all sizes

The Samurai S5000BK began as a limited edition model back in 2006 and have since become part of their regular line-up, yet even then are still only produced once every 2 years or so and in small quantities. Made from Samurai's Model "Zero" original 17oz Black raw selvage denim and cut in their S5000 silhouette with tonal Black top stitch detailing, Black coated steel tack buttons, and Copper rivets.

One unique aspect of the S5000BK is the denim's color dyeing process. The warp yarns are rope dyed in Black, and the cores of the yarns are left undyed as is common with most Japanese indigo dyed denim. This is what helps to create the exceptional fading patterns these denims are known for, by breaking off the top layer of color to expose the undyed cores beneath. So unlike non-rope dyed Black jeans which tend to just turn a Grey color all over with repeated wash and wear, the color fading properties of the S5000BK will be similar to those of Samurai's indigo denim jeans which crock and fade in areas of distress.

Warehouse 660 Re-produced and Re-stocked

We've received our new shipment of BlueinGreen660 which is a collaboration jean we've been producing together with Warehouse once annually for the last 4 years. Previous productions of the 660's were sized uncommonly large in the waist but with this new lot, the sizing has been adjusted so that now the tagged waist size roughly corresponds to the post-shrinkage waist size in inches. For example size 29 would shrink to about a 29" waist. This new production also features a longer 40" inseam. Made in Japan. Available in size 27-40, in store and online here

UPDATE: We'd like to thank everyone for their support during this recent promotional event. With your help we were able to raise close to $12,000.00 in net revenue from the sale items that enables us to make a donation of just under $6,000.00. These funds will be donated to the American Red Cross, which goes directly to Japan to help with relief efforts there via the "Blue in Green, LLC Cause-Related Marketing Promotion for Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Efforts".

This was the last production of 710's for 2010 and the end of Lot#13, this year Samurai will move on to Lot#14 and begin their 14th year of denim production as we begin our 6th year of service with Samurai, we started with Lot#9.

Oni Denim - New 1001HM Hand Made Jeans

The Oni 1001HM features seam construction and top stitch detailing done using a solitary vintage single needle sewing machine in place of the various sewing machines commonly used in denim jeans production such as double-needle lap seamer, chain stitch, or bar tack machines.The front and back center seams and back yoke seams are all french felled and single needle sewn, this is a more tedious method requiring the denim to be folded by hand and closed with several passes of the sewing machine as opposed to the traditional one-step process using a double-needle lap seamer that folds and double stitches the seams closed simultaneously.Belt loops and rear pockets are single needle stitched at points of strain and the leg opening is also folded and single needle stitched.
